Abstract

"The Global Financial Crisis and later crises clearly showed serious challenges faced by global capitalism in last decades. Focusing on successes and failures of contemporary state-led developmental experiments around the world this book provides a new fresh view on perspectives for economic development in dramatically changing world." --Andrei Yakovlev, HSE Institute for Industrial and Market Studies & Davis Center at Harvard University (United States) "The volume offers a rich collection of inspiring readings to academics, policy makers, and students interested in the theories and paths of latecomer development. Its chapters cover a large variety of latecomer trajectories from China to Turkey, and from Central and Eastern Europe to Zimbabwe. The volume captures a historical turning point at which hegemony is challenged, development paths are altered, and the future is less predictable than ever." --Béla Greskovits, Central European University, Vienna (Austria) This volume is the continuation of our research on economic and developmental policy-making in the global semi-periphery in the post-crisis cycle (see our two recently published volumes titled ‘Market-Liberalism and Economic Patriotism in Capitalist Systems’ edited by Gerőcs and Szanyi, 2019, Palgrave Macmillan and ‘The Post-Crisis Developmental State – Perspectives from the Global Periphery’ edited by Gerőcs and Ricz, 2021). Our new volume aims to be a contribution to the analysis of emerging market economies’ alternative development trajectories, as we explore the new perspectives on semi-peripheral dependent development since the Global Financial Crisis and especially amidst the new global pandemic, the COVID-19. The volume extends on topics inherently linked to the changing global context and theoretical framework of latecomer development aiming at expanding both thematic and regional focus of Comparative Capitalism research. Abstract

What is money, where does it come from, what is its purpose? Does it increase national and international inequalities? Rémy Herrera's book analyzes how the changes in the capitalist world system have consolidated, over the last decades, the supremacy of the U.S. dollar, but also how this hegemony has recently been challenged, both by rising State resistance initiatives and by the emergence of crypto-currencies, which raises many questions. Reviewing the situation of each continent, this book invites us to debate the liberation from the dollar domination, as well as the future of the euro, that of the CFA and CFP francs, of the Cuban peso or of the Chinese yuan, among others, but also the means to take in hand our collective future by mastering money. Rémy Herrera is a French economist, researcher at the CNRS (Centre national de la Recherche scientifique, National Center of Scientific Research). He has worked in financial auditing and in international institutions, including the OECD and the World Bank. He is the author of numerous books and scientific articles on economics, and teaches in several universities, especially at the Centre d'Économie de la Sorbonne. He regularly collaborates with the CETIM (Center Europe Third World), notably by supporting it in its advisory role with the United Nations.

Abstract

This book is an effort to provide a "primary source", a guide for Chinese/American cross-cultural negotiations, which has been constructed and amassed by professionals living and working in China. Research included personal interviews, surveys, case studies, face-to-face negotiations, and consulting, melded with a broad body of international business. This book that has two focuses, China market entry and negotiations, Both China and the United States are vast, complex markets, with different histories and cultures. China market entry requires extensive research and understanding, of the inextricably linked elements of (a) how business is managed in China, (b) understanding the China market, and (c) negotiating all elements of your China market entry and ongoing business. To be successful in China, your firm will face these elements in terms of explicable and solvable activities. Research into data, theory, and perceptual cultural differences between your firm and your Chinese counterparts adds magnitude to your China overall business strategy, and mandatory and essential negotiations. Abstract

"The G20 brings together the most important global actors. The club sharpens the international development agenda. They all use development cooperation as a soft power. That is why international development is always used as an important instrumental approach to foreign policy. This timely reader is a crucial contribution to better understanding the G20 in a highly dynamic and disruptive global context." -Stephan Klingebiel, Chair of the Research Programme "International and Transnational Cooperation" of the German Development Institute "This edited work, connecting the role of the G20 with the changing development landscape, is valuable in stretching our traditional understanding of these dynamics. Originally elevated as a crisis committee in the context of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the G20 has struggled to widen its agenda. As well mobilized by Emel Parlar Dal, the collection demonstrates both the will and skill of select non-Western countries within the G20 to push the privileging of South-South development cooperation and an alternative policy consensus more generally. Although facing some structural limitations, the book is testimony to the expansion of agency in an increasingly multi-polar world that needs to be considered by both scholars and practitioners." -Andrew F. Cooper, University Research Chair, Department of Political Science, and Professor, the Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo This book aims to explore G20 rising powers' increasing role in international development from a comprehensive perspective. The first part focuses on the historical development and current dynamics of (G20) rising powers' evolving actorness in international development to assess their main motivations. The second part examines the main contributions, trends and limits of G20 rising powers in South-South Cooperation. The third part analyses the linkage between G20 rising powers' active involvement in international development and their foreign policies. Emel Parlar Dal is Professor at Marmara University's Department of International Relations. She is the Jean Monnet Chair on the EU and Rising Powers (2020-2023) and the director of JM Center of Excellence on the EU's sustainability in Global Governance (2022-2025).

Abstract

This book examines the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in East Africa. The BRI is considered China's central geopolitical and geo-economic project in the era of President Xi Jinping. Through this work, the author aims to contribute to filling some research gaps, such as the lack of depth in studies of individual BRI projects and the underconsideration of processing narratives in participating countries. The guiding question is the extent to which the BRI is a political or hegemonic project of the CCP-directed state-civil society complex in East Africa. To answer these questions, databases of international organizations and policy documents are analyzed. In addition, the author conducts a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles from local media houses in the countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania to examine three infrastructure projects. The work illustrates that the BRI contributes to increasing connectivity in East Africa. At the same time, the compression of economic relations and the implementation of infrastructure projects in East Africa lead to numerous consequences and contour a hegemonic project. The Author Simon Züfle studied political science, history and international relations in Freiburg, Tübingen, Madrid, Moscow, Tehran and Beijing. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the research group "Doing Business in Africa" at the ESB Business School of Reutlingen University. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

This is the first book to apply multimedia tools to economic and business storytelling. By examining the journalism essentials as well as the advanced multimedia skills, it helps readers use the latest technological tools to integrate multimedia elements into traditional news coverage. It also explains how to tell stories solely through multimedia elements. The new language of online journalism includes writing for digital platforms, writing blogs and writing for social media and involves a wide range of multimedia skills, like video, audio, photography, graphics, data visualization and animation. Multimedia journalism allows a two-way communication with the audience that was not possible in traditional “legacy” media, and this textbook is replete with links to useful tutorials, examples of award-winning multimedia stories, and advanced digital resources, offering journalists a road map to the brave new world of digital reporting and editing.

Abstract

This book discusses to what extent the precautionary approach to fisheries management is reflected in the MSC Fisheries Standard and in the certification of four clusters of fisheries in polar waters. Certification according to private sustainability standards (ecolabelling) has become an important addition to public fisheries management in recent years. The major global ecolabel in terms of comprehensiveness and coverage is the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard. Becoming and remaining certified requires continuous behavioural adaptation from fisheries through a fine-meshed system of improvement conditions attached to certification. Focus is on how certification has influenced fisher behaviour and state practice. In the Southern Ocean krill and toothfish fisheries, MSC certification has generated new scientific knowledge about the stocks. In the Barents Sea cod and haddock fisheries, fishing companies have voluntarily adapted their behaviour to reduce the fisherys impacts on endangered, threatened and protected species and bottom habitats. In the local lumpfish fisheries in Greenland, Iceland and Norway, measures have been introduced to reduce the effects on seabirds and marine mammals. In the Northeast Atlantic mackerel fisheries, impacts have been more modest. Private certification is no panacea, but it seems to have found a niche as a supplement to national legislation and international agreements. Geir Hnneland is Adjunct Professor at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and Nord University, Norway. He holds a Ph.D. in political science and an LL.M. in the law of the sea and has published a number of books on international ocean governance, Arctic politics and Russian identity.
